Dates in office

[edit]

Just a minor point, but I believe that the official position would be that Juarez remained in office as President of the Republic during the period that Maximilian and the French were in control of Mexico City. I think the dates in the piece should reflect this. I suggest a wording like "served as President from 1861 to 1872. His presidency was interrupted by the French invasion that installed Maximilian as 'Emperor of Mexico.' Juarez continued to claim that he was the legitimate president and led a resistance movement, which was eventually sucessful."

Indigenous president

[edit]

The article lists Juárez as the first and only indigenous president of Mexico. Wasn't Victoriano Huerta also indigenous ? --JNguyenFlohic (talk) 16:53, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sources seem to disagree on this. Some say he's indigenous (implying fully). Some say he's half indigenous without elaboration. Some say his father was mestizo and his mother was indigenous. According to a source on Huerta's page, he viewed himself as indigenous.
It also depends on what one means by "indigenous". According to this government source, his mother was Huichol and his father mestizo, which would mean he was mostly indigenous, with some European ancestry. So ethnically, not fully, but this can be a fluid concept. For example, the source also says he knew the Huichol language, which many would say that combined with his ancestry makes him indigenous. The source also notes that Juárez once described Huerta as part of "the Indians", so it appears that he viewed Huerta as such. I would say yes, he was, but this is again somewhat subjective. I will see about adding this to Juárez and Huerta's pages. ThaddeusOrlando55 (talk) 03:02, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
